PLACES OF RESIDENCE VERSUS PLACES OF BIRTH

The Museum Folkwang is presenting the group of works "Wohnorte gegen Geburtsorte" by the internationally renowned artist Andreas Slominski (*1959) for the first time in a museum exhibition for the European Football Championship. The series brings together over 80 football posters that the football fan Slominski collected between 1986 and 1988. The trigger was the poster of a match in which the team from his home town at the time (Altona 93) met the team from his hometown (SV Meppen), so that Slominski could not decide who he should support. The posters announce matches in the various top leagues, sometimes also games in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga and the UEFA Cup. Places of residence versus places of birth immerses visitors in the West German football culture of the 1980s and places football as a popular sport at the centre. The design of the posters from the pre-digital age evokes memories of legendary and long-forgotten (football) events and offers a variety of opportunities to reflect on the sport of football and its changes. At the same time, the compilation creates a passionate and perceptive (social) portrait of fan culture.
