A slightly different national anthem
A slightly different national anthem
In 2006, Germany celebrated the World Cup in its own country as a "summer fairytale". The enthusiasm of national and international fans and players was huge and the mood in the country was euphoric. All the deeper the fall: Germany's celebration as a cosmopolitan nation with a multicultural team ends at the latest with the fall of national player Mesut Özil to the status of anti-hero in 2018. This case is similarly exemplary of the complicated relationship between Germans and "their" national players as Erwin Kostedde, who was the first black national player to be exposed to blatant racism on the pitch. Highlights, scandals and fates of German football are illuminated in a journey through time. Eleven actors and musicians dedicate themselves to musical highlights, both the songs sung by German national teams and the favourite songs of German fans. The question of whether sport is political is the subject of controversial debate. The starting point of the theatre project is the thesis that it is possible to read social developments and upheavals from the various tournaments of recent decades. Using various sporting and artistic questions, the artistic team is developing an evening of theatre about football.
